Get In-Touch as your ultimate rolodex! Whether used at home, in your business, your social/civic club, church, etc., In-Touch keeps you in touch with people and provides powerful and practical features: * In-Touch can maintain up to 10,000 people on file. * In-Touch maintains a "comment card" on each person in which you can enter up to 1,000 lines of free-form text per person. * In-Touch can print mailing labels on any group of names you pre- select, or print a single name/address on an envelope for you. * In-Touch will create a customizable ascii text file of your name list that includes their name and any combination of other information about that person. You can print the resulting list or import it into your favorite word processor, spreadsheet, etc. * In-Touch provides very powerful group and statistical summaries in practical, useful ways for your day-to-day needs. For example, do you need a list of all persons with their phone number? Do you want a list of all males living in a certain area code, or all "Smith"s living in a certain ZIP code? These are just a couple of examples of an infinite number of searches, summaries, and analyses that In-Touch can provide. Despite In-Touch's powerful abilities, it is very friendly and extremely easy to learn. In-Touch is so intuitive that even a novice computer user will be an expert In-Touch user in just a few minutes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ********************* In-Touch Installation ********************* The following instructions assume that you know next to nothing about DOS, or installing and running programs. I always try to remember that new computer users are many, and I wish to make things as easy and clear as possible for these new users. ******************************* Installing a registered version ******************************* If I sent you a registered copy of In-Touch on floppy disk, there is a quick and easy installation program provided on the floppy disk for your convenience. Assuming that your floppy drive is Drive A, put the disk in your floppy drive and type the following at the DOS prompt: a: (Enter) install (Enter) Simply follow the easy instructions that appear on the screen. All In-Touch program files will be copied onto your hard disk, and directions will be provided for running the program! ******************************** Installing an evaluation version ******************************** If you've received an evaluation version of In-Touch from a BBS or a friend, unzip any *.Zip files and type the following at the DOS prompt: c: (Enter) cd\ (Enter) md \In-Touch (Enter) cd \In-Touch (Enter) If the original In-Touch files are on a floppy disk, insert that disk into your floppy drive (for purposes of this example, let say it's Drive A) and type the following: copy a:\ c:\In-Touch (Enter) If the original In-Touch files are already somewhere on your hard disk, I'll assume that if you knew how to get them on your hard disk already, you'll know how to move them to the In-Touch sub- directory. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***************** Starting In-Touch ***************** To start In-Touch, type the following: c: (Enter) cd \In-Touch (Enter) In-Touch (Enter) ************** The Title Page ************** In-Touch starts with a Title Page containing copyright information. If you are using a registered version of In-Touch, note that your name (or business name) appears at the top left portion of the screen. Your name will also appear in all printouts. Pressing any key will bring you to the Main Menu. ************* The Main Menu ************* In-Touch operates on a simple principle of menu choices that you simply highlight and select. Often, a menu choice will cause another list of menu choices to appear, sometimes in a cascading sequence of menu choices that you simply highlight and select again and again. * The <Up> & <Down> Arrow keys, and the <Space Bar> key, will move, or browse, the highlight bar from one menu choice to another. * The <Enter> key will select, or execute, the highlighted menu choice. * The <Esc> key will always "escape" to the previous box of menu choices. Pressing the <Esc> key at the Main Menu allows you to quit the In-Touch program. The following is a summary of In-Touch's hierarchy of Menu Choices. You might wish to print this outline to use as a convenient quick reference while you are getting familiar with In-Touch: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Main Menu See Names See All Names, with... Output the Name List to an Ascii Text File Print Mailing Labels Address a Single Envelope Read the `In-Touch' Manual Visit DOS Quit the Program ------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's look at these menu choices in more detail below: ********* See Names ********* This Main Menu choice provides a sub-menu that lets you choose to either `See All Names' or `Find Certain Name(s) by Criteria. ************* See All Names ************* In-Touch will present a single row listing of all names currently on file, and will optionally include their: Address Home Phone Work Phone Car Phone Other Phone Date of Birth ******************************** Find Certain Name(s) by Criteria ******************************** This powerful feature lets you find sub-lists according to partial data in any combination of fields you wish. For example, if you type "Annie" in the `First Name' data field, In-Touch will only find those people who have the first name of "Annie". If you further type "62" in the `Date of Birth' field, the search will further be limited to "Annie's" born in 1962. If you further type "(706)" in the `Home Phone' data field, In-Touch will only find "Annie's" born in 1962 who live in a "(706)" area code. You can search any mix of any number of data fields that you wish. Within each data field, you can be as general or as specific as you wish. Searches are case-insensitive (that is, if you type "BOB", In-Touch will match "Bob", "bob", "bOb", or even "bObBy"). ******************* Viewing the Results ******************* Whether you chose `See All Names'/`Find Certain Name(s)...', In-Touch will instantly display a single-row list of all/matching entries. Note that if you chose to `See All Names' including their date of birth, In-Touch also shows you their current age! The <F2> key will print out the name list with all the information that appears on the screen. If you highlight a name and press the <Enter> key, In-Touch will display all of the information about that person in an expanded `Personal Information' screen. The <F2> key will print out the information that appears on this screen also. ************ Comment Card ************ By pressing the <F6> key, you can access a text-based free-form "comment card" upon which you can view and/or enter notes about that person. The comment card can accommodate up to 1,000 lines of text for each person. The <F2> key will provide flexible printing options for producing a printout of that person's comment card. At any time, you can return to the previous screen(s) by pressing the <Esc> key. ************************ Add/Update/Remove a Name ************************ ********** Add a Name ********** In-Touch presents an entry box that contains "data fields" in which you supply the basic information for that person. Enter information in each data field, and use the <Up> & <Down> arrow keys, or the <Enter> key, to move from one data field to another. The only mandatory data field is `Last Name" data field. All other data fields are optional. Use numbers only without separation characters in the `Date of Birth' field. In other words, don't type 6/3/93 as a date; type 060393 instead. When you have finished entering information in the data fields, press the <F10> key to accept the new entry. In- Touch will then add the new entry to your list of current names in the correct alphabetical order. In-Touch will also automatically make an initial entry in that person's "comment card", noting the date that person was added to the list, and finally will offer you the option of momentarily accessing the comment card yourself for any comments you may wish to make at that point. At any time, you can abort this procedure and return to the Main Menu by pressing the <Esc> key. ****************************** Update Information on a Person ****************************** In-Touch will present a list of persons from which you can highlight and select one name. You may then highlight, select, and update any data field for that person. If you change the first, middle, or last name, In-Touch will automatically resort your name list in correct alphabetical order. At any time, you can abort this procedure and return to the Main Menu by pressing the <Esc> key. *************************** Remove a Name from the List *************************** In-Touch will present a list of persons from which you can highlight and select one name. You may then permanently delete that person from the list. All related information, including the comment card, will be unrecoverable. **************** Other Options... **************** This Main Menu Choice accesses a sub-menu of other useful options which are listed below. Any additional options included in future updates of In-Touch will also be found here. ********************************* See Birthdays for the Month of... ********************************* You select a month, and In-Touch will produce a list of all people who have a birthday on that month, along with the age they will be on that birthday. The <F2> key will print out this list as shown on the screen. ****************************************** Output the Name List to an Ascii Text File ****************************************** In-Touch will generate an ascii text file of your name list. You can then print or edit the file directly for your purposes, or even import the text file into your favorite word processor, spreadsheet, etc. At minimum, this text file will consist of the names of the people in In-Touch database; however, it can include any combination of other available information on those people. For instance, you can make a text file consisting of their names, home phone numbers, and dates of birth, if you wish. The text file will be called `Names.Txt' and will reside in the default directory. Generating and modifying the text file will not affect the integrity of In-Touch's `In-Touch.Dex' master index file in any way. ******************** Print Mailing Labels ******************** In-Touch displays a list of all names which you can browse and selectively choose as few or as many names as you wish. You can then print mailing labels on a standard 2 5/8" x 15/16" roll of labels (or use the specialized "label-maker" machines). This feature is a tremendous convenience and time saver. ************************* Address a Single Envelope ************************* In-Touch will print a single name and address on an envelope for you. Just insert and position an envelope in the printer, select a person from the name list, and In-Touch does the rest. ************************ Read the In-Touch Manual ************************ This Main Menu choice will access this manual that you're reading now. Note that this manual is both text-searchable and printable. Further, you can print this manual either to the printer or to a text file. Finally, you can access this manual both from within the In-Touch program or from the DOS Command Line by simply typing "Manual" at the DOS prompt. ********* Visit DOS ********* This feature will allow you to temporarily suspend In-Touch and access the DOS prompt, with all normal DOS services available. It is important to remember to type `EXIT' when you are finished; this instantly returns you to where you left off in In-Touch's Main Menu. ***************** Quitting In-Touch ***************** Choose this option (or press the <Esc> key) to quit In-Touch and return to the DOS prompt. Note that if you are using an evaluation version of In-Touch, a convenient In-Touch order form will appear at the end of the program. Here you can simply press the <Print Screen> key on your keyboard to print out a convenient order form. Pressing any other key will return you to the DOS prompt. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- *********************** In-Touch Operating Tips *********************** ----------------------------------------------------------------------- At minimum, a name entry must contain data in the last name field. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- In-Touch creates and maintains files as follows: * All current name data is kept in `In-Touch.Dex'. * Comment card information on a given person is kept in a filename consisting of the first three letters of the first name, the first three letters of the last name, a number from 10 to 99, and a `.Dat' extension. This filename will remain the same even if the person's name is later changed. * A generated ascii text file will be named `Names.Txt'. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- In any list of names displayed on the screen, you can quickly browse through the list with the cursor control keys as follows: Down Arrow/ Moves down a list one row at a time SpaceBar Up Arrow Moves up a list one row at a time PgUp/PgDn Pages up/down a list a page at a time Home Jumps immediately to the top of a list End Jumps immediately to the end of a list Esc Quits the display of the list Also, if you press a letter on the keyboard, In-Touch will locate the first person whose last name begins with that letter. If there is no match, In-Touch will sound two quick low "clicking" sounds to indicate that no person has a last name that begins with that letter. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- When typing in a single line input box, multiple data entry fields, or when typing in the "Comment Card" text file, the cursor keys operate as follows: Down Arrow/ In multiple entry fields and text files, Enter key moves down one row at a time Up Arrow In multiple entry fields and text files, moves up one row at a time Left/Right Moves the cursor non-destructively left/right Arrows through the existing text line. PgUp/PgDn In text files, pages up/down the text file a page at a time Insert Inserts characters into a text line at the current cursor position. Delete Deletes characters in a text line at the current cursor position. Home Jumps immediately to the beginning of a line End Jumps immediately to the end of a line F9 Within a text file, inserts a blank line, pushing the current text line down one row. F10 Within a text file (and after confirming by pressing <F10> again), deletes the current text line. Esc Finishes or aborts the entry procedure. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ********************* In-Touch Registration ********************* If you find that you are using the evaluation version of In-Touch regularly, you can register for the latest full-featured version of In-Touch by sending $10 (for personal use) or $29 (for business use) to RAD Software PO Box 1991 Columbus, GA 31902-1991 In the Main Menu of the evaluation version of In-Touch, you can select "...to Order In-Touch" and then press the <PrntScrn> key to print out a convenient order form, or you can use the order form in the accompanying Catalog.Com catalog file. If these ordering options are not available to you, please make sure to specify: 1) The name of the person, business, agency, or institution to whom In-Touch is to be registered (This name is imbedded in the custom-made copy of In-Touch sent to you). 2) The program name (In-Touch) 3) The version number of your evaluation copy 4) The size floppy disk needed (5 1/4" or 3 1/2") Finally, if this is an evaluation version, you are encouraged to freely distribute copies of this program for others to review. Please make sure to include all the files originally included in this package.
